Avon was originally settled in 1645 as part of Farmington. It was known as Northington, or the North Parish of Farmington, until it was incorporated as a separate town in 1830, taking its name from the Avon River in England. Today, Avon is part of Hartford County and is governed by a Town Council/Town Manager form of local government. In 2011, Avon’s population was 17,859 with a median age of 44. The town covers 22.6 square miles, or 14,454 acres and has 6,993 households with a median income of $107,733.

Avon Volunteer Fire Department -Incorporated in 1943, the Avon Volunteer Fire Department proudly protects more than 18,000 people living in the 22.6 square mile area that makes up the Town of Avon, Connecticut. The Department’s mission is to provide fire suppression and prevention, life safety and rescue support, as well as other community support to the citizens of Avon. In addition, the Department provides mutual aid support to those surrounding communities that, in time of need, may request such assistance.

Avon Historical Society – Founded in 1974, the Avon Historical Society is a volunteer, nonprofit organization devoted to preserving Avon’s culture, traditions and heritage. We offer education, programs, exhibits and living history experiences for the community to enjoy now, while also curating a legacy for future generations to appreciate.
